TAPE

Virtual tape with live looping and overdubbing capabilities

Last updated 1 day ago

Material Device

TAPE is a device designed for live looping and overdubbing. Both variable and fixed recording lengths are supported for recording into the dedicated 30-second buffer on each instance of the device. Utilising varispeed recording allows for recording and overdubbing in different speeds or even in reverse on the virtual tape for complex, layered sequences.

Parameters

ROTATE Adjust the rotation of the virtual tape reel.

LEVEL Adjust the amplitude of the virtual tape reel.

SOS A bipolar slider that controls the sound on sound behaviour of TAPE.

  • 0% (default): Will monitor the TAPE output as well as the incoming audio at full volume.

  • 100%: Will mute the incoming audio and only pass through the TAPE output

  • -100%: Will mute the TAPE output and only pass through incoming audio

Actions

LOAD Open the Sample Browser for loading a sample into TAPE.

REWIND Moves the playhead to the beginning of the virtual tape reel.

REVERSE A toggle for reversing playback.

RECORD (When TAPE buffer is empty) -

OVERDUB (When TAPE buffer is not empty) -

MONITOR Enables monitor. See Monitor Settings for more details.

Recording and Overdubbing in TAPE

TAPE offers different ways of recording into the dedicated 30-second buffer. Recording can happen when the buffer is empty indicated by the TAPE icon and no waveform.

  • VARIABLE: This is the default way of recording into TAPE, and is indicated by the text under the LENGTH parameter. In this mode, the buffer length is determined dynamically based on the recording length.

  • FIXED: If length is adjusted, a fixed length for the recording can be set. By using the different Parameter Modes on LENGTH it is possible to set a fixed length either in seconds or quantized (1 bar quantization by default).

When a recording has ended either by tapping RECORD when recording or when the buffer is full, the RECORD action will turn into an OVERDUB button. Activating overdub, will add sound to the existing buffer according to the value set on the SOS parameter.

While overdubbing is always non-quantized, starting and ending recordings in an empty buffer is quantized by default. Quantization for recording can be adjusted. Read more here.

Post Record Action

There are two different behaviours available for what happens when a recording has ended on an empty TAPE device.

  • PLAY: Disables recording and plays the recorded audio.

  • OVERDUB: Enables overdub for continuous recording situations.

This setting is called POST RECORD ACTION and is found by tapping [CONFIG] and navigating to the METER menu.

Monitor Behaviour

The MONITOR action in TAPE allows for two ways of monitoring.

  • OFF: Outputs TAPE audio

  • ON: Outputs SOS mix

This action can either by set manually, or by using the MONITOR ON RECORD setting found by tapping [CONFIG] and navigating to the AUDIO menu. Toggling this setting on, will automatically enable MONITOR when a recording has started.

SPEED Adjust the the playback speed of the tape reel.

LENGTH Adjust the length position of the tape reel. Exceeding LENGTH the above the sample duration will add silence to the buffer.
