Setup with External Gear

Using samples on an external USB drive

When inserting a USB flash drive into the S4, a folder in the Sample Browser becomes available called USB DRIVE. The samples on the drive can be accessed from this folder.

The USB flash drive needs to be formatted to FAT32 in order for it to be used with the S4. You can not copy the samples from the USB flash drive onto the S4.

Can I use a USB-hub to load samples from a USB drive while using the audio over USB?

This is not possible, as the S4 can’t be a host and device at the same time.

The S4 can either be a host (reading from a USB drive), or a device (acting as an audio interface).

Can I sync my other gear with the S4?

The S4 has MIDI sync over USB and over TRS with the included TRS- MIDI type-A adapter.

The S4 can be synchronised with an external analog clock. The S4 can send or receive an analog clock at 24 PPQN using the rear Sync In and Sync Out connections

Press [CONFIG]MIDI for synchronisation settings.

Controlling the S4 with MIDI

Parameters on the S4 can be controlled using MIDI CC and MIDI notes.

The individual tracks correspond to the MIDI Channel set in [CONFIG] -> TRACK -> MIDI CHANNEL.

By default the tracks receive MIDI on MIDI Channel 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Using the S4 as an audio interface

The S4 provides an USB audio interface with 10 in / 10 out channels for multitracking.

Extend (available in 2.0): The extend mode makes the USB inputs and outputs available to the S4 as additional inputs and outputs.

Using S4 as an audio interface with a computer is CPU intensive:

  • Avoid sending many simultaneous notes to POLY

  • Avoid having high settings of SIZE in MOSAIC
