Parameters and Action Buttons

Parameters

Parameters on the S-4 are value sliders that respond to both user input and modulation. The values set by these parameters directly control the audio engine, shaping the behavior and sound of each device. The 2×8 parameter layout shown on the display always corresponds to the PARAMETER encoders on the front panel.

The S-4 includes three types of parameters: unipolar, bipolar, and select. Each type is clearly indicated in the interface, making it easy to identify how a parameter behaves and what kind of values it uses.

  • Unipolar parameters range from a minimum to maximum in a single direction (e.g., 0 to 100%).

  • Bipolar parameters are centered and can move in both positive and negative directions (e.g., –100% to +100%).

  • Select parameters cycle through a set of discrete options or modes (e.g., waveforms, playback types).

Actions

Each device on the S-4 can have up to eight Actions, which perform context-specific tasks, ranging from loading samples to freezing delays. These Actions are always mapped to the four [ACTION] buttons on the front panel, making them quick and intuitive to access.

Some devices also feature secondary Actions, which can be triggered by holding [CTRL] while pressing an [ACTION] button.

Parameter Mode Selection

Some parameters on the S-4 offer multiple modes. These Parameter Modes can be used to select scales for pitch or speed-related parameters, set time divisions for time-based controls, or adjust specific behaviours within certain devices.

When a parameter supports multiple modes, a Mode Select icon is displayed in the top-right corner of the parameter box, indicating that mode selection options are available.

  1. Navigate to a device that has a parameter with the Mode Select indicator

  2. Press and hold the corresponding PARAMETER encoder

  3. While holding, turn the encoder to highlight a Parameter Mode

  4. Let go of the PARAMETER encoder to select the highlighted Parameter Mode

While in Parameter Mode selection, [ACTION] buttons can also be used to navigate the list up and down.
