Velocity & Probability

Velocity sets the base dynamic level of the selected Track. Hold [CTRL] to access Probability, which determines how often notes are skipped during playback. Together, they let you shape both the overall intensity of a pattern and how steady or unpredictable it feels.

Knob Behavior

ActionDescription
TurnAdjust the base velocity of notes in the Track.
[CTRL] + TurnAdjust Probability. Turn clockwise to apply probability to all notes, or counter-clockwise to apply probability to pulses only.

Value Button Behavior

ActionDescription
PushSet the Track’s base velocity directly using the [VALUE] buttons.
[CTRL] + PushSet Probability directly using the [VALUE] buttons, from 0% to 100%. Use [VB8] and [VB16] to shift the phase of the random probability sequence.

How Random modulation applies to Velocity:

  • Clockwise: +/- base velocity differently for each note in the chord
  • Counterclockwise: +/- base velocity equally for each note in the chord
  • Unit: Per cycle

See the Random Behavior Reference.

Applying Probability to a Track

Probability determines how likely notes are to be skipped during playback. At its center position, no notes are removed. From there, the direction you turn (PROBABILITY) determines what type of events are affected:

  • Turning (PROBABILITY) clockwise applies probability to all notes, including repeats.
  • Turning (PROBABILITY) counter-clockwise applies probability to pulses only.

When a pulse is skipped, any repeats that would have been generated from that pulse are skipped as well.

  1. Select a Track.
  2. Hold [CTRL] and turn (VELOCITY) clockwise to increase the chance of skipping all notes.
  3. Hold [CTRL] and turn (VELOCITY) counter-clockwise to increase the chance of skipping pulses only.
  4. Optionally hold [CTRL] and press a [VALUE] button to set the probability amount directly.
  5. Press [CLEAR] + [VALUE] to reset the selected parameter to its default setting and clear randomization.

Configuring the Random Probability Sequence

The random sequence used by Probability is linked to the (RANDOM) parameter. Changing (RANDOM) changes the underlying variation pattern used by Probability.

You can also shift the phase of the random probability sequence while in the Probability menu:

  1. Hold [CTRL].
  2. Double-tap (VELOCITY) while holding [CTRL].
  3. Press [VB8] to shift the sequence forwards.
  4. Press [VB16] to shift the sequence backwards.

This lets you keep the same overall amount of probability while changing where the skips occur in the pattern.
