Mapping Mode and the Modulation Source View
There are two views available when working with modulation on the S4. These are called the Mapping Mode and the Modulation Source View. The two modulation views are described below:
Mapping Mode
In Mapping Mode, devices can be navigated and modulation mappings can be made. The view focuses on which parameters are being modulated and allows for quick, hands-on mapping.

Opening Mapping Mode
- Hold [MOD] to open Mapping Mode
- While holding [MOD] tap an [ACTION] button to navigate to any of the four modulators
- Letting go of [MOD] will either:
- Return to device if a mapping has been made
- Open Modulation Source View if no mappings has been made
Modulation Source View
Each modulator offers a unique set of controls, which vary based on the type of modulator selected in a slot. The Modulation Source View is used to define how the modulation behaves.

Opening the Modulation Source View
- Tap [MOD] to open the Modulation Source View
- To switch modulators when viewing the Modulation Source View, hold [MOD] and tap any of the four [ACTION] buttons and let go of [MOD]
- Tap [MOD] again to close the Modulation Source View
The Modulation Source View defaults to displaying the settings for the previously selected modulator.
Toggling between Mapping Mode and the Modulation Source View
- Hold [MOD] to enter Mapping Mode
- While holding [MOD], tap an [ACTION] button to access one of the four modulators
- While still holding [MOD], tap the same [ACTION] button repeatedly to toggle between Mapping Mode and the Modulation Source View
- Once in the Modulation Source View, the [MOD] button can be released to latch the view
- To resume toggling, hold [MOD] again and tap an [ACTION] button
Assigning a Modulator to a Modulator Slot
Like Devices, Modulators follow the same modular structure. This means that the type of Modulator selected in any given Modulator Slot can be changed at any time.
- While in Modulation Source View, tap [SELECT] to see list of Modulators
- Highlight a Modulator
- Tap [SELECT] to assign the highlighted Modulator to the current Modulator Slot
All Modulator Groups on the S4 default to the same set of four Modulators, providing a versatile starting point for modulation across Tracks, Perform, and Mix views.
| Num | Default Modulator |
|---|---|
| MOD 1 | RANDOM |
| MOD 2 | RANDOM |
| MOD 3 | WAVE |
| MOD 4 | WAVE |
