MIDI Connectivity

The S4 supports MIDI communication through both its dedicated MIDI In/Out ports and the USB-C connection. Each of the four tracks can be independently controlled via dedicated MIDI channels. The MIDI In and Out ports use TRS Type A 3.5mm jacks and require a compatible adapter to connect to standard MIDI DIN cables.

5 Pin DIN MIDI In / Out​

The rear panel of the S4 includes two dedicated MIDI ports designed for use with 3.5mm to 5-pin DIN Type A adapters. These allow standard 5-pin DIN MIDI cables to be connected seamlessly. To control the S4 using external gear—such as a MIDI keyboard or sequencer—simply connect the device to the MIDI Input port.

If the device connecting to S4 also uses a MIDI TRS Type A connection, a standard 3.5mm stereo jack to jack cable can be used instead of the adapters both ends.

USB MIDI In / Out​

The USB-C Connection also allows interfacing to other gear, DAWs and controllers. S4 is supported as a USB MIDI device on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Ensure the USB cable is specified for data communication.

Set the S4 and the external device to the same MIDI Channel i.e. Channel 1.

USB Host/Device mode​

The S4 USB-C port can operate as either USB host or USB device. Each mode supports different ways of operation.

HostThe S4 functions as a USB host, allowing you to connect external USB MIDI devices directly to it. Multiple devices can be connected using a USB 2.0 or 3.0 hub.
DeviceThe S4 connects to another USB host (e.g., a computer) and operates as both a USB Audio and USB MIDI device.

It is not possible to connect the S4 to a computer and another USB MIDI device at the same time. In this scenario, connect all equipment to the computer and route the MIDI to the S4 from a DAW.
